Join us on the picket lines! Support Miami workers!

AFSCME Local 209, the union representing nearly 900 service workers at Miami University in Southwest Ohio, is on strike as of 12:01 a.m. Friday, September 26.

The primary reasons are 20% below-market pay, increasing health care costs, and the University's rejection of "fair share" dues paying. As one woman on strike put it, "I'm tired of being broke!"

The concept is a simple one: no one who works at Miami should need to use public assistance, as an estimated 20-25% of the bargaining unit do. It is outrageous that Miami workers struggle to make it from paycheck to paycheck as Miami increases tuition 10% annually.

Miami has the funds - ability to pay has never been an issue at the negotiating table - but administrators choose to prioritize spending $500 million in facilities over 20 years over a living wage.

Miami is also spending hundreds of thousands of tuition dollars on union-busting law firms, Pinkerton thugs, police overtime, and temporary scabs. All this to defeat a living wage the lowest-paid workers on campus!

Watch your e-mail for action alerts and updates. The success of this strike depends on the support of people like you.

This site is a work in progress!

Hello Folks,

The official, unofficial 2003 Labor Notes conference WikiWeblog is when we fight for our rights....

I have been asked to make this page (they call us troublemakers) the front page of the WikiWeblog, which I have no problem doing. But I am not going to move the few posts from the conference here, just bop over there for now.

The initial work that needs to be done to this site is a cleaner link bar (on left, folks suggest links?) and I need to make sure that all the RSS feeds and comments features are working on AllPages.

I also need to set up NewIsFree to be the default RecentChanges.

All this in one week, it will be a cake walk! :-) MarkDilley

(with your help, anything will be easy!)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not sure why the post, organize or die is still here, thoughtI erased it!

This version of how to make a WikiWeblog needs to be broken down into several steps.

Educate
* What is a Weblog? (some say "Blog")
** A weblog is just a web site organized by time.

* What is a NewsAggregator
** software that periodically reads a set of news sources ... finds the new bits, and displays them in reverse-chronological order on a single page

Agitate
* Do you wish there was a LaborCalendar that you could find out what Solidarity Actions need to happen?
* Do you wish you could read all your email for the important chunks of information?
* In fact, don't you just wish email was for one on one communication?
* Shouldn't many to many communication be easier?

Organize
* Easier to self organize information
* We become the media
* Easily learn to produce and read the news you want - WikiWeblog

First Day Attempts

I feel fairly successful, I started this project a few weeks ago and it has blossomed into kind of a cool idea.

FrontPage

I am having fun building this easy dynamic WikiWeblog.

Anyone can join my wiki meme, or start one of their own. We get updates through the NewsAgregators.
